When I bought my Kayak at Kittery Trading post, it was recommended by the
salesperson, who seemed very knowledgeable. In addition to that, he recommended
a pump to suck the water out of a swamped Kayak before trying the re-entry.
Although I don't do much open water, and I can usually find dry ground not
too far from where I am Kyakking, I took him up on the suggestion due to his
experience and the thought of sinking a kayak in the open ocean. I don't know
the name, but it was a yellow inflatable piece that wraps around the paddle,
then it is inflated and the other end of the paddle is inserted in the bungee
cords for stability. I practiced a few times in a pool before venturing out
and it definitely works. Without it, an open water re-entry would be impossible,
to say the least. I imagine drifting with this out one side would provide enough
stability to fight fish without the worry of tipping. Chasing them would be
a different story, FYI - its Kevin! See you out there!
