Just a quick update on some recent PI threads:
The problem with the lifeguards prohibiting fishing on the beach has been solved.
There was a meeting sometime last week where they voted to change some of the
wording in the original law so that now it is up to the lifeguards and/or police
to decide when and where it is appropriate to fish. They have also created a
position on the safety committee for a member of the Plum Island surfcasters to
represent the interests of fisherman.
The beaches were closed for a day or so due to high bacteria counts in the water.
After all the rains, water samples taken from the beach showed a rating of 500
or so, where the limit is 200. A few days later the count went down to 50
something and the beaches were re-opened.
After going fishless this weekend after spending 4 hours in the canoe in deep
fog at Joppa Flats Saturday morning, and 3 hours on the beachfront Sunday night,
I didn't think the fish would ever return. After all the rain, it seemed like
the mouth of the Merrimack would never see an incoming tide again.
On the plus side, I fished Joppa tonight at low tide and caught half a dozen or
so small schoolies, and a couple of slightly bigger fish from the beachfront.
So there may still be hope for things to pick up again before we hit the dog days
of mid-summer.
Anyways, just wanted to update some of the regular PI folks on what was going on,
I've noticed that the number of PI trip reports has really dropped off lately,
although it could be because of the BBS getting filled up.
