There's an Orvis shop in Lake Placid with maps and info, and there's an old timer named Fran Betters who has a flyshop somewhere on the west branch of the Ausable who's something of a local institution. I've seen stuff by and about him on a web page somewhere. I fished it last summer on a hot midday and still pulled a few brown trout out of riffles in the stretch below the (Wilmington?) dam in the no-kill area. The guys in the northeast regional bulletin board at the Virtual Flyshop can probably give you better pointers. There is also a page on Adirondacks flyfishing somewhere which is where I think I saw the Betters' article.
