Newport - 2nd beach report

The wind died last nite so I went out about 7 to the western rocks
next to 2nd beach. I fanned the water till 8 w. a variety of flies
and lines to no avail.

At the same time a guy w/ a rattletrap was taking fish right next to
me. At 8 I switched to spinning gear and got 2 schoolies way out at the
limit of my cast.

This morning I went back and experimented w. the fly rod then the jig.
By 8 I had it figured out. The fish are hanging on the bottom behind the
rise of the furthest breaker, perhaps 40 yards out from the rocks.

Normal casts did not reach the fish, an all out pendulum sling w. my 6'
rod and 1/2 oz. jig was needed to get the extra distance. Forget it w/
a fly rod. Also - any sort of retrieve didn't work. Heaving the jig
out to my range limit; letting it sink and waiting for a pickup was
a pretty consistent fish per cast. Same technique in closer did not
work; the fish appeared to be hanging off some structure 40 yards out.

Most of the fish caught this way were hooked through the bottom lip.
This implies to me that the fish are head down, grubbing along the bottom
as opposed to feeding in the water column.
