South Cape - 4/30 report

Fished the Falmouth Ponds and waquoit watershed today. Air temp was
in the 60's, pond water temp is at least high 40's, sea temp is 47,
skys clear. Serious wind, perhaps 25 knots precluded fly fishing
except w/ the wind at my back.

Got a dozen or so fat 18-20" stripers at Great Pond at the tip of the
west jetty in the last hour of outgoing. Met up w/ another Reel-Times reader,
George Driscoll who was also getting fish after fish at the same spot.

Cycled to Green, Bournes and Eel Pond in series and got a few smaller
fish at Green Pond on low incoming. Bournes and Eel were dead though I
am excited by the dredging action at Eel. They have made two tremendously steep holes there which bode well for this summer.

Fished the Moonakis River up Waquoit at mid-incoming and got 4-5 disgusting
fin rot schoolies which I didn't want to even touch. I left w./ the bite
still active because the fish were gross. Nothing in Childs River or
Little River off of Waquoit.

All fish to this point on spinning gear w/ a small bucktail jig/ray's fly
dropper combo. Perhaps every 4th or 5th fish took the fly, most were
on the jig.

Went back to Green Pond at 5, hooked a decent fish at the end of the jetty
on the 7 wt. and lost it to the churn of the waves and surf. I need to
relearn how to steer fish when I use the 7 wt., it has less backbone
than my lightest spinning rod.
