5-4-97: Cape Southside, Canal, and North River (Shad)

Sunday for me was a day to forget, other than the weather.

Only a couple of hits and drops on a hard incoming tide at Osterville, Cotuit, and Falmouth.
Bournes Pond (thanks Larry B.) had a bunch of schoolies under the bridge at the inlet
whacking small bait but were ignoring what I was throwing at them. I've been
having better luck on the outgoing at all these places.

Also, guys were trying for bluefish on the beachfront in various spots, but I
haven't seen any hooked or landed yet.

I checked the Herring Run at the Canal, which was hopping. At
least 10 people had "keepers" and several others had fish on when I arrived about an
hour before low slack tide. As far as I could tell, at least half would not
have been keepers last year. Livelining herring is the way to go here.

As an aside, I talked to a Plymouth native who said that the Pymouth Nuke has been
shut down. Anyone been there to confirm? If so, it's too bad; 'twas a fine fishing
spot and just about a guarantee of fish in the spring.

As a final punishment, I checked the North/Indianhead confluence up river on the way
back. The shad were running well, but only a couple of hits and drops for yours truly.
A few had 6 or 7 fish in an hour and others were skunked. I haven't fished this place
in 2 yrs and realize that I have to reacquire a certain knack. At least that's my lame excuse...
