5-8-97: Connecticut/Chicopee R. (Shad/Striper) report

Snuck away for the afternoon to try for shad. The Chicopee was on the slow side
--a few fish taken--so I checked out the Connecticut on the South Hadley side below
the dam. The river is still running high, but, boy were the fish thick. Caught
about 20 in a couple of hours and lost another 10 in the current. They seem to be
lying in the slow water pockets next to the fast current in various places.
The place was crowded but everyone was constantly into fish. Because of the crowds and
the limited access, flyfishing would be difficult here right now.

They are also catching stripers here, up to 20 inches so far. I would think that
this is the end of the line for stripers on the Connecticut, unless they lift them
in the fish elevator along with the shad and herring.
