Down in Virginia "shad planking" is a major event, politicians and bunting abound. On the Delaware River towns of NJ and PA there are spring shad festivals where they cook and presumably eat the stuff.
I have heard a recipe for planked shad: nail the shad by its tail to a plank, lean the plank over a smoky fire and smoke for several hours, throw away the shad and eat the plank.
