In flyfishing for stripers I recommend a heavy shock tippet of about 12 inches or so of about 40 lb test. This way you can grab that thing and get in in. As for tippets, use as heavy as you can get away with and then put more pressure on the fish as you can. This past week I hooked a fat albert on the beach in Beaufort Inlet, NC with many boats zipping about in the inlet. I didn't want the fish out there and lose my fly line so I bent the rod back so the handle was actually pointing behind me. with a ten wt flyrod that is a decent amount of pressure for a fish. well that albie stopped dead in it's tracks when I had my rod bent all the way like that and the fight was over in 5 minutes. If a fish is running and you are pointing your rod out over the water like you would with a trout and a 6X tippet, you are not doing yourself or the fish any favors.
