A schizophrenic fishing weekend.
The incoming storm on Saturday really turned on the fishing. The morning started
out inauspiciously at the east end of the Canal with a few finicky bass around
but that was about it. Drove down the bay side checking out places like Scorton.
There was a big school of birds working over breaking fish just east of Scorton
in a non-publicly accessible area. I took this as a good sign and continued to
head east hoping to intercept a school I could get to. Pulled into Millway Road
at Barnstable Harbor at the last stages of the incoming and walked east. Birds
were working all along the shore for about 200 yds. and the bass were in close
hitting everything. Easily caught 20-30 fish, all cookie cutter size.
This action dissipated and I headed back to Millway Rd. Looked across the boat channel
and the coves next to Rendezvous Pt. were loaded with breaking bass in close.
Drove over to Rendezvous and picked up a few more before quitting for a lunch
break. They were still feeding hard when I left.
On the way back, checked the Canal east end again. The storm at this point was really
starting to kick up. The entire mooring basin across from the power plant was filled
with screeching gulls, bait, and bass zipping in and out amongst the pilings
and right up against the rocks. Nothing > than 24 inches but it was no problem
catching big numbers of linesides.
I decided I'd had enough of the monsoon and left while things were still going strong.
Sunday was nothing like Saturday. There were moderate numbers of schoolies in the
mooring basin early in the morning that quickly moved out to the middle and
stayed there. The bay locations that were hot on Saturday were dead on Sunday,
including Barnstable Hbr. I checked out various RI locations, but the storm
had dirtied things up enough that there really wasn't much happening.
Hope to check out the Cape tomorrow morning.
