I read a similar article, although I can't remember where, that described
the comeback of the striper, but with potentially disastrous long-term
effects. Evidently the sheer numbers of fish are depleting the food supply
faster, therefore the average growth rate of the fish is much slower than
years past. Part of this is why the minimum keeper size is being adjusted
yearly, although I don't follow the logic. If the abundance of smaller fish
are taking their toll on the bait, why don't they allow a small limit on
the smaller fish to control them. Anyway, mother nature always wins in the
long run, so we will see how it plays out. I don't think a fish over
say, 16 -18 inches per day would kill the run though, and might benefit the
people who are in need of fish as a food source. The rest of us sportfishers
will surely get our fish anyway. Bait for thought.
