There is a definite lack of truly large bass (over 40 pounds) as compared to
say 10-12 years ago. My theory is that more bass that are reaching keeper size
of 28" are being kept. Also the fact that commercial states that have a minumum
commercial size of over 34-36" are taking many of our fish that could be trophies in a few years. What we need gentleman is to allow the commercials
a slot limit for smaller bass so that more of the larger bass that they catch
will be released. NY commercials have a slot limit of 34-38" I think. We as
sportsman need to ask our fisheries managers to develop regulations that will
give us a trophy fishery. The other alternative is gamefish status but I wonn't
hold my breath for that; unless the bass stock collapses in the future.
