Ed,
I'll have to give Point Gammon a try as I have never been there to wet a line.
Monomoy is a definite for sure. Last May and June was my first time on the flats
there. I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the cruising fish that swam from the
deeper water up to within casting range in the shallows. All I could think of at the
sight of a couple of these beauties was the tarpon I got was casting to a couple of weeks
earlier in just north of Key West. Trying to get a decent cast and presentation to those
xtra large fish definately gave me a case of "buck fever". At any rate...I was able to hook
and land a couple of smaller fish, though none over the 30 inch mark or so.
I will be trying again around these flats mid May (and many times after that) but I am planning
another tactic this year. I will be bring my kayak out, which by the way, is really fun to fish
from, and I am going to tie some monstrously long eel imitations...things in purples and chartreuse,
I am just starting to get into this type of a fly design...but it will have to go deep and be light
and easy to cast. I am thinking of lead eyes similar to clausers with long-fine synthetic fibers to
make the fly (or eel) appear to be bulkier than it actually is. The Largest stripers seem to be taken
in the area which I fish with eels up to a foot long..and maybe longer. I figure giving this a try
could be worthwhile. Along with the kayak giving me access to the slots and channels that the larger
fish hang out in, I might just come up with the right combination for a real large fish this year. I
have had the opportunity to fish in the surf at night with Tony Stetsko at night for the big fellows,
but I would much prefer to do this during the daylight hours... If you happen to see a fellow in a kayak
doing something like this, be sure to say hello to me!!
