9-6 & 9-7-97: Chatham and Canal Report

Lighthouse Beach is still good for keepers, as long as you're using eels. Fewer
and smaller fish than when I was here Labor Day weekend, but still decent action.
Had a 34 inch and a 27 inch. Once again, lost a fish larger than the 34-inch, mostly
because I was experimenting with the hook set timing with the circle hooks and
got a little too lackadaisical on the retrieve. A family about 50 yds away from
me was hooting and hollering and shining lights on beached fish, so I assume they
were also doing well.

Strangely, the bite started and ended at exactly the same times (9-10 PM) as a
week ago, even though the tide stage was completely different. Do stripers have
some kind of built-in alarm clock for feeding time?!

On the way back this morning, checked out the Ditch. A few schools of small
stripers in the east end attacking teensy bait, but most were out of casting range.
In general, the action has died down here from a week ago. But it's merely a pause,
I'm sure.

I'm off to the left coast for 3 weeks, and then back Oct. 1 for the fall run.
See y'all then...
