Started fishing near Gilkens access around 5:30am. Absolutely a beautiful morning;
clear skies, no wind, and flat clear seas. Unfortunately no fish. Well that is
not entirely true. There were plenty of albacore harassing bait, but these fish
were on the far side of the bar about 100 yards out. I need a boat! Managed to
catch one tiny bluefish before moving to the north jetty. Lots of bait in the
water, but nothing happening other than a few follows by blues. Gave up on the
jetty and headed north up the beach. Found albacore at Area 10 about 50 feet off
the beach, but they moved off before I could get a crack at them. They
periodically made appearances in the same general area, but they were hard to get
a crack at because of all the sunbathers and bait fisherman around. Cruised up and
down the beach for a hour or two trying to find some space and fish, but it wasn't
to be. Packed away the fly rod, headed back to area 10 and chucked "Crippled Herrings"
for an hour. Once again there were albacore in range, but none obliged. Not a
productive day, but the fish are there.
