After reading Jim McCaffrey's post on Dec. 1 following his expedition to Popponesset over the Thanksgiving weekend --
"You should have gone over to Popponesset Spit yesterday, schoolies were stacked up
in the waterway between the start of the spit and the small island across from it.
Not very big though. "
Well, got up early yesterday (Sunday, 12/7) and trucked over to Wading Place Road in Mashpee. Nice morning. Light WSW wind, temps around 36. Walked north to the end of the Popponesset Spit where there were a lot of gulls floating around.
Looking for the "small island" that Jim mentioned, but confused, I fished the fast outgoing water on the inside of the spit. I was too cold and lazy to switch to a fast sinking link, so I let my chartreuse clouser on an intermediate line drift and sink. N
o bumps for about 2 dozen casts so I moved back to the south on the inside of the spit. The only small island I could see was a small mud bank near the river that winds along the bottom of Popponesset Bay near the waterfront homes. Great drop-off, moving
water, so I tossed another 3 dozen casts in the channel. No bumps.
So, this post is the long way of saying, I tried. It was nice to get outside. And it marks my first attempt at membership in the 12-month Striper Club.
Next weekend: Scorton.
