Little Speedsters Starting to Show

July 31st, 2009

This week has been the warmest all year, it actually feels like the dog days of summer.  Hot weather equals two things to many Southern New England fisherman:  false albacore and bonito.  Little tuna chasers will be happy to know there have been isolated reports of bonito being caught in the region, but no solid blitzes [...]

Shifting Sands

July 24th, 2009

Right now as I write this introduction, the wind is whistling through the trees, a small craft warning has been posted.  Somewhere on the Cape there are waves crashing on the beach.  Most fisherman are aware of the importance of structure when it comes to targeting striped bass.  Unfortunately most of the structure found on [...]

July 24th, 2009

NEW YORK/NEW JERSEY Midsummer heat has come later than usual this year but the fishing has been steady across the region with anglers enjoying the benefits of masses of sand eels among other baitfish inundating our waters. Check out the photo of the big crab lodged in Brendan McCarthy’s bass’ throat. It might make you [...]

Sand eels and summer bluefish blitzes

July 17th, 2009

I’m on vacation this week, enjoying the crystal clear waters of the St. Lawrence River.  While saltwater fishing is my clear favorite, it is good to get away and experience something a little different.  The St. Lawrence River is a world class fishery with smallmouth bass, pike, and muskie the main attractions in the area we vacation.  [...]

Guest captain

July 14th, 2009

Anglers fishing with me on the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, had action with tarpon, snook and trout during the past couple weeks. A persistent west wind has forced us to fish in areas other than the coastal gulf. Although we spent some time fishing bridges and passes for large tarpon, the best tarpon action was with juvenile tarpon from 10-to-35 pounds in canals. Anglers fishing Sarasota Bay with me had good action with snook before dawn and trout on deep grass flats.

Midsummer Days Yield Qualilty Bite for Much of the Region

July 10th, 2009

This crazy weather continues and with it we have had some unpredictable yet, at times, excellent fly fishing. The flats fishing on the east end has been productive wehen sunlight has been available. Crabs and sand eels abound and fish are feeding opportunistically as they will at this time of year with many forage choices [...]

Fishing- the Economic Stimulus Package!

July 10th, 2009

How much do you spend on fishing? Or perhaps another way of looking at it, How much does fishing cost you? I know some of us keep a journal of our fishing trips, tides, lures, weather, and results, what about a journal of all your expenses to fish?

No holiday from the good fishing

July 10th, 2009

Is possible we skip the summer slow down and go right into fall fishing? Will fall start with a wimper because the fall temperature drop and water cooling is less dramatic than previous years? What impact will all this have on the peanuts? Who knows, but stay tuned.
